Q1.Who is qualified to purchase?

  • Only “short-term entry foreign visitors” are eligible for the Pass and One-Way Ticket. Visitors who entered Taiwan with a R.O.C passport or a valid alien resident certificate are not applicable for these products.
  • Short-term entry refers to persons who entered Taiwan with an entry document with less than 180 days for one-time stay. Therefore, when passengers use the Pass/Ticket, you must present their passports and valid entry documents that adhere to the regulation above (e.g. Visa-exempt entry stamp, Visa, Exit & Entry Permit Taiwan Republic of China, APEC Business Travel Card) for verification.
  • For Child Pass/Ticket, children over the age of 6 years and under 12 years old may purchase the Child Pass/Ticket; and children under 6 years old who do not occupy a seat are not required to purchase a Pass/Ticket, but those who would like to occupy a seat will have to purchase a child Pass/Ticket. The children passport must be provided to confirm their eligibility when redeeming or boarding. If the identity of the child found is ineligible, the Pass/Ticket will be refused to redeem and board.
  • THSRC and TRA reserve the right to refuse unqualified passengers to exchange, collect, and use the Pass/Ticket.

Q2.Where can I buy the products?

  • For passengers who want to purchase the Pass, you can purchase the Pass/Joint Pass from this website or a travel agency authorized by THSRC.
  • For passengers who want to purchase a One-Way Ticket, you can purchase the Ticket from a travel agency.
  • The passenger will receive a redeem code after successful payment. This redeem code is only used for redeeming, booking, or collecting your physical Pass/Ticket. The code cannot be used to board the train. For detailed ticket usage methods and rules, please refer to Q3 to Q11.

Q3.Method of use - How to redeem, book, and collect the Pass or One-Way Ticket?

  • Passengers can use the following channels to complete redemption and booking(s):
    1. Please click the ‘Manage’ button on the top of home page to redeem travel date(s) and booking(s). Please proceed to any THSR ticketing counter to collect the physical Pass or Ticket before boarding.
    2. Passengers can also redeem travel dates and reserve a seat at any THSR ticketing counter. If you have no booking requirements, you may travel in non-reserved seating cars on THSR trains.
    3. For the Joint Pass holders, you can redeem the physical Pass at ticketing counters in designated TRA stations (Songshan station, Taipei station, Taoyuan station, Taichung station, Tainan station, and Kaohsiung station), aside at the THSR stations.
  • Regarding the booking methods described above, the website and THSR ticketing counters only process THSR bookings and the TRA ticketing counters only process TRA bookings.
  • Redemption and booking times are as below:
    1. Passengers must complete travel date redemption within 90 days (inclusive, based on Taiwan time) from the payment date. However, travel date(s) can only be selected after the date of payment.
    2. The redemption date starts from 00:00 on the 28th day before the travel date. If the times are adjusted, the THSRC will announce the information on the corporate website.
    3. After redemption, passengers can book reserved seats in standard class on THSR trains. However, bookings for trains on the reserved travel date must be made at least 1 hour before departure time.
  • When passengers redeem, book, or collect tickets from THSR or TRA ticketing counters, please present your redeem code, passport (original), and valid short-term entry document for verification by station staffs.
  • Online processing is not allowed once the physical Pass/Ticket is collected. If you have any questions, please visit the ticketing counters at any THSR station.

Q4.Method of use - How to use the Pass/One-Way Ticket?

  • When using the THSR/Joint Pass or THSR Ticket, you must enter the station through the manual ticket gates and carry your passport for verification.
  • The passenger shall board the trains according to the date, train number, departure/arrival station, and seat number on the Pass/Ticket. Passengers with no booked seat may travel in non-reserved seating cars in Standard Class on THSR trains.
  • Passengers holding the Joint Pass must collect their Joint Pass at any TRA station to take TRA trains.

Q5.Method of use - How do you cancel your travel date(s) or booking(s) if you have already redeemed/booked online?

  • Before collecting the Pass/One-Way Ticket, if you need to cancel the travel date(s), please process it before the following deadlines. If the deadlines are not met, the cancellation will not be processed:
    1. For passengers who have completed online redemption but have not booked a seat on the first travel date, please cancel the redemption online before 23:59 of the day. (based on Taiwan time)
    2. For passengers who have completed online redemption and have booked a seat on the first travel date, please cancel the redemption at least 30 minutes before the time of departure for the first train booked on the day. All originally booked seats will be canceled simultaneously.
    3. After canceling the redeemed dates, you can redeem new travel dates.
  • If you need to cancel your THSR reservation, please do so at least 30 minutes before the original train departs. No cancellation will be processed after the train departs.

Q6.Method of use - How do you modify your travel date(s) or booking(s) if you have already collected the Pass/One-Way Ticket?

  • Online processing will not be applicable for Pass/Ticket being collected. The travel date(s) can only be modified once. If you need to modify the date(s) or booking(s), please carry your Pass/Ticket and your original copy of passport to any THSR ticketing counter within ticketing service hours. (Note: ticketing service times of THSR counters vary from station to station)
    1. For passengers who have not booked a seat on the first travel date, please proceed to a THSR ticketing counter before 23:59 of the day.
    2. For passengers with a booking on the first travel date, please proceed to a THSR ticketing counter at least 30 minutes before the first train booked on the day departs.
    3. For Joint Pass holders, if you have already redeemed the Taiwan Railway Joint Pass, the travel dates cannot be modified.
  • If you need to modify your THSR reservation, please do so at least 30 minutes before the original train departs. No cancellation will be processed after the train departs.

Q7.Method of use - How to apply for a refund?

  • Please apply for the refund from the original travel agency within the refund period, and the refund policy may vary from agency to agency. (For purchases made on the THSR Pass website, the refund deadline is 91 days after the payment date (inclusive). The time is based on Taiwan time)
  • For passengers who have redeemed or booked online but have not collected the Pass/One-Way Ticket, please cancel the redemption online before the deadline. After cancellation, you can apply for a refund from the original travel agency within refund period. (Please refer to Q5 for the redemption cancellation guidelines)
  • Passengers who have collected the physical Pass/Ticket cannot apply for a refund.

Q8.Terms of use for the Pass/One-Way Ticket

  • Pass/Ticket holders are entitled to travel in non-reserved seating cars of standard class on THSR trains. Additional charges will not be incurred if the holder requires a reserved seat. (Please refer to Q3 for related booking methods).
  • THSR Pass/Joint Pass/Ticket are not eligible for THSR business class.
  • THSR and TRA do not guarantee seats during peak hours or holidays.
  • THSR Pass/Joint Pass/Ticket can only be used by the individual owner and cannot be transferred.
  • If the passenger is unable to present their passport or entry documents, is not the person on the Pass/Ticket, or violates the regulations in any way, THSRC and TRA have the right to deny Pass/Ticket redemption. Passengers who have already used the Pass/Ticket must pay for another ticket after the fact. The original Pass/Ticket is not eligible for cancellation or refunds.
  • Once the physical Pass/Ticket has been collected, any form of refund will not be accepted. If the passenger loses, damages, or has their Pass/Ticket stolen before or after their trip, the Pass/Ticket will not be replaced, reported as lost, or refunded.
  • Only the Pass/Ticket original will be accepted. If the original has been photocopied, altered, or damaged beyond recognition, the original will be deemed invalid.
  • For other regulations and details related to different products, please refer to Q9~Q11.

Q9.THSR 3-Day/Flexible 2-Day Pass information

    1. THSR 3-Day Pass: The start of the valid travel dates shall be a day within 28 days of redemption and the 3 consecutive days will be counted.
    2. THSR Flexible 2-Day Pass: The start of the valid travel dates shall be a day within 28 days of redemption and the second day shall be selected within the 7-day period.
    3. The dates will be calculated based on Taiwan time. From 00:00 to 23:59 is counted as one day.
  • 5 bookings are allowed for online booking. For more bookings, please visit the ticketing counter in the THSR station.
  • On designated dates, passengers can enjoy unlimited standard class service from any station to any other station. Passengers can use either reserved seating or non-reserved seating.

Q10.5-Day Standard/Premium Joint Pass information

  • The product offers service on THSR and TRA trains.
  • Applicable travel dates for both products are as follows:
    1. The start of the valid travel dates shall be a day within 28 days of redemption and the 5 consecutive days will be counted. The passenger can take TRA trains in the 5 days described above and select 2 days to take THSR trains within the valid period.
    2. The dates will be calculated based on Taiwan time. From 00:00 to 23:59 is counted as one day.
  • THSR usage rules are as follows:
    1. 5 bookings are allowed for online booking. For more bookings, please visit the ticketing counter in the THSR station.
    2. On designated dates, passengers can enjoy unlimited standard class service from any station to any other station. Passengers can use either reserved seating or non-reserved seating.
  • TRA usage rules are as follows:
    1. TRA trains cannot be booked in advance online.
    2. The 5-Day Standard Joint Pass can be used for non-reserved seating on TRA Chu-Kuang Express and Fu-Hsing Semi Express, reserved seating is not provided. The Pass is not eligible for Tze-Chiang Limited Express, Taroko Express, Puyuma Express, Tourist trains, cruise-style trains, and other trains designated by TRA.
    3. The 5-Day Premium Joint Pass can be used for Tze-Chiang Limited Express and other train services in lower classifications (there must be seats available on the Taroko Express and Puyuma Express to use the train services). The Pass is not eligible for Tourist trains, cruise-style trains, and other trains designated by TRA. If you have needs regarding bookings, please go to the ticketing counters in any TRA station.

Q11.One-Way Ticket information

  • Please redeem the Ticket within 90 days from the date of payment (inclusive), but travel date can only be selected after the date of payment.
  • The journey interval must be specified when purchasing the Ticket.
  • The Ticket holder may travel in a reserved seat or non-reserved seat in standard class once only. The valid travel date must be one day within 28 days of the redemption date (the dates will be calculated based on Taiwan time. From 00:00 to 23:59 is counted as one day).
  • The reservation can only be made once and must be processed online or at the ticketing counters in THSR stations

Q12.What do I do if extraordinary circumstances occur?

  • Pass:
    1. If the train is delayed, service is interrupted or canceled, the air conditioning is malfunctioning, or other special circumstances occur, the Pass will not be compensated for, nor will the valid period be extended.
    2. For passengers who are unable to travel due to sickness or injury, the Pass will not be compensated for, nor will the valid period be extended.
    3. Due to weather conditions (e.g. Typhoon warning) that causes train delays, interrupted or canceled service, or other special circumstances occur, the Pass will not be compensated for, nor will the valid period be extended.
  • One-Way Ticket:
    1. If train service is suspended or interrupted on the day of travel, causing the passenger to stop their journey at the departure station or return to the departure station, the full fare will be refunded. If the passenger's travel is stopped at a station between the departure and arrival stations, the ticket fare for the untraveled section of the trip will be refunded.
    2. If the train to the arrival station is delayed due to reasons on the day of travel, the handling methods are as follows:
      • For delays caused by THSRC: 50% of the ticket fare will be refunded for delays longer than 30 minutes (inclusive) and less than 60 minutes. The full fare will be refunded if the delay is longer than 60 minutes (inclusive).
      • For delays not caused by THSRC, 10% of the fare will be refunded if the delay is longer than 30 minutes.
    3. For passengers who are unable to travel due to sickness or injury, before the travel date, the passenger can apply for a refund with proof of medical attention from a hospital. During the journey, if you are unable to continue the trip due to sickness or injury, you can apply for the refund for the untraveled section of the trip with the Ticket and the proof of medical attention.
    4. If the passenger has to stop their travels at the departure station or returning departure station due to weather (e.g. Typhoon warning), the full fare will be refunded. If the passenger's travel is stopped at a station between the departure and arrival stations, the ticket fare for the untraveled section of the trip will be refunded.
    5. If the air conditioning is malfunctioning in the carriage, the passenger may request 20% of the fare as compensation.
    6. If you encounter one of the situations above, you should present the Ticket to apply for a refund from the original travel agency.
    7. All refunds will be calculated in NTD.

  • If you need wheelchair accessible seating, please go to the ticketing counters in any THSR station to process the request.
  • If you purchased the Pass through THSR Pass website, you can retrieve your invoice and voucher by clicking the ‘Download Voucher’ button after payment. The system will also send the Voucher to you by email. Passengers can proceed to ‘Manage’ on the website to query the orders and download the Voucher.
  • If you have purchased a Pass/One-Way Ticket from a travel agency, the purchase receipt or Voucher will be provided by the travel agency.
  • No proof of purchase will be provided for reserved seating booked after Pass/One-Way Ticket redemption.
  • In event of discrepancies between the Chinese version and the English version or Japanese version, the Chinese version shall always prevail.
